GCAA Selects COMSOFT WAM Technology

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Jun 4, 2010 - The United Arab Emirates will upgrade its surveillance infrastructure using a country-spanning active Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) system.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of Abu Dhabi has contracted the augmentation of its Quadrant surveillance infrastructure and will obtain a WAM system by extending its existing network of redundant Quadrant ground stations with eight additional ADS-B/WAM sensors plus active interrogation.

The emerging infrastructure, with a total of 14 sensors and additional processing equipment, will cover most of the airspace under control of the GCAA. Four additional locations will be added to the existing sites feeding accurate position reports into the main processing unit at Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Centre.

GCAA is well known for its pioneering role in the region when it comes to the adoption of most modern techniques at its state-of-the art ATC Centre in Abu Dhabi. The excellent experience with COMSOFT's ADS-B solution - installed a couple of years ago - now prompted GCAA to complement its radar and ADS-B based surveillance infrastructure by Wide Area Multilateration. The benefits emerging from GCAA's decision will be improved coverage, high performance and considerable cost savings.

COMSOFT's Quadrant product family includes a powerful sensor for ADS-B and MLAT surveillance along with a remote interrogator. In combination with a central processor and an interrogator controller, it forms an active WAM system for Mode S and Mode A/C.
