Avon Protection, an Avon Rubber p.l.c. company, is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of CBRN respiratory protection equipment. Avon has been supplying respirators to the UK Ministry of Defence and other NATO allies for over 80 years and is the sole supplier of military respirators to the US armed forces, supplying the M50 Joint Service General Purpose Mask. Organisation successes include the recent completion of the FM53 performance trials at the world renowned independent testing authority TNO in The Netherlands. The trials focused on the APR performance of the mask and used the latest test method referred to as “The Battlefield Protection Factor Test”. Compared to traditional laboratory testing, the test method is stringent. The mask wearer is required to carry out typical military field activities such as running, jumping, diving for cover and digging, whilst being exposed to a very high concentration of CBRN simulant, up to 2 million particles per cm³.
Avon has also expanded its escape hood range which now includes the EH20 and the NH15. The EH20 has been specifically designed to protect users against CBRN agents. It provides a high level of respiratory, eye and face protection for up to 20 minutes to allow sufficient time to escape from a contaminated area. Also available is the groundbreaking ST53 which combines Avon’s FM53 mask with new and innovative modular breathing apparatus technology to provide positive pressure SCBA and/or PAPR capability.
